Remaining carbon budget for 1.5 °C
About 99.5 billion tonnes of CO₂ remain in the 1.5 °C budget as of 2026-09-23.
A 50 % chance of staying below 1.5 °C. 130 Gt from 1 January 2026, spent at the 2025 rate of 42 Gt a year: about 1,330 tonnes every second. At this pace the budget runs out around February 2029.

Removal, so far.
Three registry categories count as carbon removal: biomass, alkalinity and direct air capture.
The world removes about 2.2 Gt a year today, almost all of it by forests. It needs 8.75 Gt by 2050. The projects that get us there are the ones Atlas is preparing to rate.
